The MNR is proposing to establish one new recommended conservation reserve on the southwest shore of Long Lake, recommended additions to two existing conservation reserves (Onaman Lake and Kagianagami Lake) and a recommended addition to one provincial nature reserve (Sedgman Lake).

Description of policy
The MNR is proposing to establish one new recommended conservation reserve on the southwest shore of Long Lake, recommended additions to two existing conservation reserves (Onaman Lake and Kagianagami Lake) and a recommended addition to one provincial nature reserve (Sedgman Lake). An amendment to the Crown Land Use Policy Atlas will be required to establish the land use intent for these recommended protected areas.
The new protected areas were identified in response to a proposal for an expanded wood processing facility in the municipality of Greenstone. The growth of the forest sector in the Greenstone area combined with an increase in protected areas to fill gaps in ecological representation is consistent with MNR's commitments in the Ontario Forest Accord.
The proposed protected areas total approximately 14,700 hectares and together improve representation of ecological features in the area just east of Lake Nipigon. The Ministry of Natural Resources worked in cooperation with the Partnership of Public Lands, the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, the Ontario Prospectors Association, the Ontario Waterpower Association, and the forest companies to develop these proposals for new protected areas within the woodshed of the proposed expanded wood processing facility.
Purpose of policy
The purpose of the proposal is to establish new protected areas east of Lake Nipigon to improve the level of ecological representation contained within Ontario's protected area system. The Crown Land Use Policy Atlas is proposed to be amended to establish the land use intent of these areas as recommended provincial park and conservation reserves.
