Bulletin details

The Ontario government is committed to bold and transformative action in order to tackle Ontario’s housing supply crisis and reach the goal of building at least 1.5 million homes by 2031. Municipalities are critical partners in achieving this goal and while many municipalities have taken significant steps to increase their local housing supply, Ontario needs an unprecedented amount of new homes to meet current and anticipated demand.

Twenty-one municipalities across Ontario with a population projected to be 50,000 or more by 2031 have been assigned housing targets. These municipalities will develop Municipal Housing Pledges that will identify the tools and strategies that they intend to use to achieve their housing targets.

This request builds on the government’s ask in Fall 2022 for 29 of Ontario’s largest and fastest growing municipalities to submit Municipal Housing Pledges. To reach the goal of at least 1.5 million homes built by 2031, Ontario needs all municipalities across the province to do their part in providing homes for future population growth.
