Submission to the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing Consultation on Growing the Size of the Green Belt
I recommend the following:
1. expanding the existing Urban River Valley designated areas in the Greenbelt Plan to include the Proposed Expansion Areas,

Permanently protecting lands and waters within the Greenbelt is key to maintaining and improving the resiliency of local food systems and the physical, social and economic health of the nine million Ontarians living in the GGH.

The greenbelt expansion is crucial to the area of Brant County where I live. Farmland has already been reduced by urban sprawl, and the class 1-3 lands must be protected in order to ensure future food security.

1. Paris and Galt Moraines should be included in the Greenbelt and all the Grand River watershed as it is source water for 800,000 Ontarians, now and over 1,000,000 in the future. Moraines in southern Ontario provide water for 4 out of 5 Ontarians.

1) Add to the Greenbelt all Natural Heritage Systems for contiguous protection and add the south slope of the Oak Ridges Moraine in Northumberland County to protect the agricultural lands for farming, the forests, wetland, and cold water streams down to the shoreline of Lake Iroquois.

Any expansion of the Greenbelt must also fully preserve the existing natural state of the Greenbelt. The current proposed route for Hwy 413 will do unnecessary and irreparable damages to currently protected Greenbelt lands, which further expansions cannot compensate.

Of great importance are headwaters of watersheds excluded from the Greenbelt earlier, in "whitebelt" lands and under threat of development.
An urgent example is the Carruthers Creek, which should have been included in the Greenbelt in 2005 and there is an opportunity now to address that.
