An Environmental Compliance Approval with Limited Operational Flexibility (air & noise) has been issued to Greenstone Gold Mines GP Inc., located in Greenstone, Ontario. The facility undertakes gold ore mining and milling.
This approval replaces all the current Environmental Compliance Approvals for air and noise at this facility and includes the addition of new, or historically unapproved, sources of emissions.
This approval includes all sources at the facility, including:
- aggregate extraction and processing
- open pit development and mining (blasting, drilling, ore/mine rock extraction and material handling)
- ore, mine rock and overburden handling, crushing and stockpiling
- ore processing (crushing, milling, cyanide leaching, carbon-in-pulp processing, carbon stripping, electrowinning, gold dore bar production and carbon regeneration)
- tailings management and treatment
- fuel storage
- maintenance facilities
- an explosives plant
- a concrete batch plant
- mine water and sewage treatment
- natural gas fired power generation
- haul roadways
Emissions to the air from this facility include:
- particulate matter including crystalline silica
- metals including chromium, aluminum and nickel
- products of combustion such as nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide
The Environmental Compliance Approval with Limited Operational Flexibility (air), when issued, permits modifications to the facility subject to limits on operational flexibility that include a production limit for the facility to be specified on the Environmental Compliance Approval with Limited Operational Flexibility (air).
The limited operational flexibility conditions have an expiry date. The company will be required to make an application for amendment at that time to renew these conditions.

This proposal is for an Environmental Compliance Approval with Limited Operational Flexibility (Air and Noise), which replaces all the current Environmental Compliance Approvals for Air and Noise at this facility, and includes the addition of new, or historically unapproved sources of emissions from Greenstone Gold Mines GP Inc., an open pit gold mine and processing facility located in Geraldton, Ontario.
The proposal includes all sources at the facility, including:
- an open pit
- ore processing operations including crushing, blasting, and drilling
- ore processing plants
- waste rock storage areas
- ore and overburden stockpiles
- a lime storage silo
- furnaces
- kilns
- chemical storage tanks
- a portable crusher
- bulldozing and grading operations
- a tailings management facility
- a natural gas-fuelled power plant
- dust collectors
- other ancillary equipment and support processes
