Proposal details

This proposal is for an amendment to Environmental Compliance Approval No. 4505-5L2Q44, including the consolidation of sewage works approved under TA-32-91 for the establishment, modification, and consolidation of sewage works servicing Martyrs’ Shrine in Midland, Ontario.

The proposed sewage works will collect, convey, treat, and dispose of domestic sewage generated by existing and proposed facilities throughout the property.

The sewage works will include sanitary collection infrastructure, septic tanks, pumping stations, forcemains, flow equalization facilities, a packaged wastewater treatment plant with phosphorus treatment, and subsurface disposal facilities. Existing sewage works throughout the property will be consolidated under a single Environmental Compliance Approval.

The proposed treatment system has a design capacity of approximately 65,000 litres per day, with flow equalization provided to accommodate variations in sewage generation associated with pilgrimage activities and peak visitation. Estimated sewage flows are approximately 41,275 litres per day during non-pilgrimage periods and up to approximately 121,275 litres per day during peak pilgrimage periods.

Treated effluent will be discharged to an expanded subsurface disposal system for final dispersal into the ground. The proposed upgrades are intended to improve effluent quality and provide adequate treatment and disposal capacity for facilities throughout the property.
