I almost didn't take the time to write this; in a busy life and stressful world it's too easy to let these things slip by, and allow government actions like these go unchallenged and unnoticed. There are too many other things to do to worry about staying informed and active in politics. But the planet has no voice to defend itself, so I will write what I can.
We need a real climate change plan to reduce emissions, to help people save money by reducing energy use and getting into the clean energy industry. That will be the way of the future, or mankind will not be around long enough to see much of a future. As a developed country with a great wealth of innovators and education, we can be a leader in clean energy economics. But we have to choose to be.
We need a price on carbon pollution through a fee-and-dividend plan, which charges polluters and returns money to the pockets of Ontarians. There is no better incentive than a monetary one to encourage a change in societal habits, so let's start putting it to use for good.
We need legally binding emissions targets in line with our obligations to the Paris Climate Agreement. Because this isn't just about Canada either; our choices affect the entire world. We are, per capita, one of the worst polluters on this planet, in greenhouse gases especially, and we have no excuse. We know better. We have the resources and the accessible technology to change this. It's time we did, before the struggling people of the globe who had no part in the warming of our planet have to pay the price.
We need the redirection of fossil fuel subsidies into clean energy solutions. We don't need to see our economy suffer for the planet; we can boost our economy at the same time as our global conscience.
Bill 4 will not supply this. Bill 4 will work against this. And it is my generation, and the nations without the resources we enjoy that are going to suffer for it in the long run. We want to be a leader for this country and our world, so let's lead by example. Please do not let Bill 4 pass.
