Climate change is one of the key challenges of our times and Ontario has been a leader in the efforts to address this problem. Repealing the cap and trade program would be a grave mistake and take us backwards on climate policy at a time when urgency and progress are what is needed. Putting a price on carbon is one of the most efficient ways of generating climate action and reducing emissions and there is broad public support for the cap and trade program from across party lines. The Ford government has an opportunity here. Dropping Bill 4 and resuming the cap and trade program would maintain and even enhance Ontario's leadership on climate action in a way that brings Ontarians together and contributes to the development of the low carbon, green economy. This is the way forward.
I have studied climate change politics for the last two decades and have seen many lost opportunities for leadership and action on climate change that both makes a difference and is good for the economy. Don't lose another opportunity and don't take Ontario backwards. Drop Bill 4 and resume the cap and trade program.
