As an Ontario resident and voter, I implore the Ontario Government not to exempt the proposed Highway 413 from the requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act. The EAA was crafted for vital reasons- to protect the beauty and integrity of this land we call home, with due respect to the land and all the species who rely on it, including our own. It is irresponsible of the Ontario Government to place expediency in the moment above the needs of all future generations by disregarding the policies that they committed to when taking office.
There are alternative methods for creating a more efficient system for commuters without forcing this highway through without appropriate respect for the safeguards and structures that are in place in our legal system, particularly that there is limited evidence to suggest it will significantly improve the lives of most people in this province. The Ontario government has provided no good reason to justify their disregard of a policy that exists to protect Ontarians and the environment. Convenience is not a justification for showing callous disregard for the natural world and human well-being.
