As an environmental student, I am deeply concerned about the proposed Highway 413 Act. Exempting this massive infrastructure project from the Environmental Assessment Act could have grave ecological consequences. The fast-track process could poorly address habitat fragmentation, wildlife corridors, and biodiversity loss. Furthermore, supporting car-oriented development contradicts all current efforts and undertakings for mitigating climate change. Equally disturbing is that some permits would no longer be subject to requirements of public comment, further reducing any semblance of transparency and community input. I respectfully recognize valid concerns about gridlock, but I strongly encourage the government to revisit this strategy in light of more sustainable alternatives that can balance transportation needs with the protection of the environment and civic involvement.
