Have a close looks at both #7 blast furnace and coke making as a whole. The rest of the steel plant can almost be widely ignored. With the commissioning of the EAF, less and less money and time have been spent on these departments. Out of the 3 operating batteries in Algoma, two desperately need to be relined with brick. The throughwalls have eroded so much, that the steel buckstays need to be cut back, to allow the pusher free movement through the battery. With less of a gap between the walls and pusher, even more putrid toxins are able to leach by and circumvent any kind of filtration or stacking. The stacks for coke making themselves have noticeably darkened and thickened in the last few years. The pipe collapse in the winter of 2024? Effectively neglect from management to spend the money the area needs. There are platforms a dozen stories above the ground at both the blast furnace and coke making that no one should be setting foot on. If some consultants that aren’t already on Algoma’s side visit the plant with the MOL, watch the operating process and see the care and condition of the place - they should be shutting it down. There is no possible way that both the blast furnace and coke ovens are operating as designed, even if they’ve been upgraded over the years. A company seeking investment in a new future will spend the bare minimum on their aging infrastructure. They’re more of a burden than an asset.
