As a retired supervisor and local 2724 executive I have extensive knowledge of the steelmaking process. Living in close proximity to the plant I have a birds eye view of the emissions almost daily. I have noticed an increase in pollution especially concerning the coke ovens. I realize that an equipment failure there has caused a significant increase in pollutants. However my fear is that remedial repairs have not taken place due to the ovens becoming obsolete with the new EAF coming on line. My sources have informed me that the startup will not happen until at least the 3rd or 4th quarter of 2025. I have also been informed that the coke ovens and #7 blast furnace will continue to operate well past that date meaning that emissions will continue to escalate for several more years. I do believe that Algoma should be forced into making repairs to both the coke batteries and byproduct plant to avoid these deadly emissions.
