We live across the river and downwind from the Algoma Steel Plant in Sault Ste Marie, MI. For decades we have been exposed to the toxins coming out of this plant. My wife is a cancer survivor, and we feel that this plant could have contributed to it. We have visitors here from all over the US and they look at the dark clouds of toxins coming out of this plant and can't believe they are allowed to do this. It seems that this summer they are not using their baghouses as much which we don't understand.
We hope these new EAC's will reduce the pollution. Algoma steel has polluted some of the cleanest air and water on the planet and it has to stop. We don't feel the MOE is doing their job. You have executives in charge of this plant making millions at the expense of our health. Does anybody in Canada realize that polluting our air, water and land is not how you treat your neighbor. What if auto executives and military vehicle makers knew about all the cancer that this plant has caused, do you think they would want to continue to buy Algoma's steel? Some feel that we should start charging for ships going through our Soo Locks to pay for all the cancer and pollution damage this plant is causing.
These new furnaces should have real time stack gas monitors and set up an online site that sends out alerts when the plant goes out of compliance and is shut down until it is fixed. Way too many people have gotten sick from the toxins coming out of this plant. It has to stop.
