There should never be any leniency for carcinogenic pollution. Society seems to understand this for the most part when it has to do with smoking cigarettes around non-smokers and children. Why should we look the other way when a large corporation is spewing out black clouds of cancer causing smoke multiple times a day. Ever since they started working on the arc furnace project it's gotten continuously worse. Now that the coke ovens are scheduled to shut down they're neglecting them because theres no payback on needed maintenance when all that's considered is the bottom line and it's just going to get worse unless they start getting fined every time a black cloud is seen above the steelplant. I don't buy the "we're spending all our money to build the clean, green arc furnace so we can't do anything about the pollution right now" because it's a fabricated ultimatum. That would be like the school board letting a teacher smoke in a classroom full of kids because next year they're retiring and a new teacher who doesn't smoke will replace them and it will be so much healthier. Historically cancer rates were already bad in Sault Ste Marie but it's just going to get worse for the next 5 years if this isn't addressed.
