The current ECA provides no information on how the ongoing emissions from the coke oven stacks will meet the regulatory limits. A review of the Environmental Incidents on the company website shows longstanding exceedences at each of the oven stacks.

In fact previous reporting gave the number of times each stack exceeded the 20% opacity for a 6 minute time period. These numbers were regularly between 15 and 20 times per stack per day. Apparently MECP allowed Algoma Steel to simplify their reporting and only report a single statement of exceedence for each stack each day. This is hardly an example of the transparency that the company has committed to.

Without adequate information it is impossible to give any meaningful comments on a blatant violation of the Regulation with respect to stack opacity. The dark plumes are a daily occurrence and doesn't present a good image to visitors crossing the International Bridge as this is their first view of Canada.

These emissions are also of significant impact on the local residents who have grown accustomed to this but are likely unaware that this is a violation of the existing regulation that has been allowed to continue without enforcement. One would think if someone were caught stealing 15 times a day there would be some consequences.
