The proposal notes that Algoma Steel Inc. is applying to transition its manufacturing process from integrated basic oxygen steelmaking to electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking. The proposal notes what chemicals will be found in air emissions from the new manufacturing process, but does not indicate how this differs from the current manufacturing process (e.g., Are the same chemicals produced - and in similar quantities - in both processes? Do the emission limits change with the transition?). There is insufficient detail in this proposal to enable further comments - I am assuming approval of this proposal would mean approval of the transition in manufacturing process, with the air emission limits set at the current provincial standard for the new process, but that is not made clear in the proposal.
The proposal does indicate that there will be a separate proposal posted for comment in future, on the site-specific emission standards Algoma Steel Inc. will be requesting. If the current proposal is approved, can supporting materials for this upcoming proposal please be made available online (e.g., any environmental impact assessment), so that the public can comment meaningfully?
