The provincial government does not have the authority to exempt itself from federal regulations.
This Highway 413 act seeks to replace the federal environmental assessment process with a provincial one, thereby avoiding federal oversight and putting environmental decisions in the hands of our provincial leaders. But our provincial leaders are not sufficiently trustworthy to make these decisions, as they have already demonstrated a strong priority for development with reckless disregard for the environment. (For example, the rapid destruction of over 800 mature trees and naturalized habitat at Ontario place, in the face of significant protest.)
This attempt to seize control of the environmental assessment processes for Highway 413 shows us that they intend to build the highway regardless of the environmental impact, and that is not acceptable.
