What principles should the government provide to the OEB to help inform the Board’s ongoing development of natural gas connection policies?
- The government should work towards minimizing fossil fuel use. We have access to cold climate heat pumps for heating. There does not need to be additional gas connections for new homes, better built homes with heat pumps or geothermal heat pumps for multi unit homes. Why build infrastructure that will be obsolete by 2050.
What role should natural gas play in supporting energy affordability and customer choice in residential and small commercial applications (e.g., space and water heating)?
It should be a bridge fuel with the understanding that thermal storage technologies and electrification - as is happening in Europe, UK, California and BC can be adopted for Ontario. Electricity is a more energy efficient and safer fuel than natural gas. Electricity will be cheaper once locally sourced cheap renewable energy is deployed. (I have solar on my roof and drive and EV) Many developing countries are skipping transitioning to natural gas and are going from coal to solar + batteries.
What role should natural gas play in supporting economic development in Ontario’s industrial and agricultural sectors, including those processes that may be difficult to electrify?
Natural gas for fertilizer production can be transitioned to ammonia and hydrogen. Industrial sectors are also working on decarbonization.
What role should the government play in supporting and expediting the rational expansion of the natural gas system to make home heating more affordable and support economic growth in communities that are seeking natural gas service?
The government should enable a market approach and allow low cost solar and wind to be deployed instead of promoting natural gas.
For natural gas expansion projects receiving government support, should the approvals processes be streamlined to support affordable home heating for Ontarians? In what ways?
No - there are safety concerns with natural gas - explosion risk. There were deaths in Ontario from carbon monoxide poisoning from natural gas fuels. Please do not streamline
What role should natural gas play in supporting power system security and resiliency?
An every reducing role till we get to net zero by 2050.
What role should natural gas play in offsetting higher GHG-emitting fuel sources?
Natural gas a bridge fuel is not necessary. Heat pumps are cheaper.
What are the challenges and opportunities for enhanced energy efficiency, adoption of clean fuels (e.g., RNG, Hydrogen) and emission reduction methods (e.g., carbon capture and storage) to lower emissions in the natural gas system?
Hydrogen is economics. See various research papers. Hydrogen for chemicals is viable. There is not enough renewable natural gas supply. Only sources currently are landfills. Dont waste taxpayer money to appease the fossil fuel industry.
The questions provided are not neutral and seem to position the reader to support natural gas. Please do better for taxpayers and ratepayers
