It would be a grave mistake to follow through with these changes to the endangered species act. I am especially worried about the provincial governments ability to intervene, and remove species at risk. This is especially risky as certain governments can make politically motivated decisions driven by financial outcomes to remove species. (IE- remove a species if it intervenes with development etc).
I work in the field of environmental education, and can tell you first hand that this legislation is effective as is (unchanged). It’s accessible, backed by science and provides a solid level of protection for species at risk. If anything, these species need additional protections. The Carolinian zone alone in SW Ontario is home to 25% of the nations species at risk, and many are suffering due to development, human wildlife conflict and climate change. We need to protect these species as they all play critical roles in conserving our environment.
I hope you consider mine, and many other opinions that species at risk are worth saving.
