Hello;
The proposed interim changes to Ontario’s *Endangered Species Act, 2007* and the introduction of the *Species Conservation Act, 2025* raise serious concerns about the future of at-risk wildlife in the province. Over the past decade, habitat destruction, climate change, and weak enforcement have already pushed many species—like the woodland caribou, barn owl, and spotted turtle—to the brink. Instead of strengthening protections, these changes appear to prioritize industry and development over science-based conservation, further delaying action while species continue to decline.
Ontario has already lost populations of iconic animals like the eastern wolf and American eel due to inadequate protections. If the government waters down habitat safeguards, speeds up permitting for harmful projects, or reduces recovery requirements, more species will disappear forever. Endangered animals can’t afford "interim" measures that favor short-term economic gains over their survival. Strong, immediate action—not weakened laws—is what’s needed to stop extinction in Ontario.
- Sincerely;
A Fellow Canadian living in Ontario.
