Bill 5 is an egregious assault on our province and democracy.
If passed, it would keep Ontario dependent on imported fracked gas from the U.S. by killing homegrown renewable energy. Additionally, it would enable the government to ban all parts of energy projects that come from abroad, especially China. China makes the majority of solar panels (over 80 per cent), wind turbines (around 60 per cent) and control systems in the world. If enacted, this will likely end solar power installation in Ontario and deprive Ontarians access to the cleanest source of new electricity available. Yet, we're looking at looming energy shortages as we electrify our economy and worsening impacts of the climate crisis. This is mind boggling to even attempt to process!
Additionally, Bill 5 would repeal Ontario’s Endangered Species Act, 2007 marking the end of most meaningful provincial protections for endangered, threatened and special concern species in Ontario.
Bill 5 would also attempt to curtail Indigenous involvement by ending archeological assessment requirements that would identify Indigenous or other cultural values. By creating special Economic Zones (SEZ), i would also allow hand-picked developers to be able to ignore municipal and provincial laws.
Finally, it would exempt the Therme Group development at Ontario Place from the requirements of the Environmental Bill of Rights.
While some of these things may be supported by those who supported your party(less than 20% of eligible voters), the vast majority of Ontarians do not support much or all of this bill. As such, in order to be 'for the people' you need to once again understand that you've made a major misstep here and repeal the bill entirely. There's still time to do what's right like you did with the Greenbelt.
