I’m writing to express serious concern about Ontario’s plan to repeal the Endangered Species Act. Weakening legal protections for the habitats of endangered and threatened birds is a major step in the wrong direction.
Limiting protection to just a nest or “dwelling place” ignores how deeply birds rely on the broader landscape - forests, wetlands, and grasslands - for feeding, breeding, and migration. Without meaningful habitat protection, these species will struggle to survive.
Voluntary measures and relying on the federal government aren’t enough. Ontario needs to take real responsibility for its unique ecosystems and at-risk wildlife.
I urge the government to reconsider and ensure strong, enforceable protections are in place - not just for individual nests, but for the habitats that give these birds a future
