Ontario’s Endangered Species Act felt forward thinking regarding the protection of Ontario’s biodiversity when it was enacted in 2007. The act that is now being proposed to replace it, The Protect Ontario By Unleashing Our Economy Act 2025, I feel, is a misnomer in that it would not protect Ontario. I believe it would harm Ontario. A thriving biodiverse province that has strong oversight in place to ensure development is executed in an environmentally sensitive manner, I understand to be a crucial ingredient to a healthy economy. Our water, soil, air, and climate all depend upon a biologically diverse environment.

The Protect Ontario By Unleashing Our Economy Act 2025 would expedite many development projects by changing the permit process to a simple registration before beginning the project. This, it seems to me, would allow politicians to decide on development without consulting scientists and experts in the environmental field.

Bill 5 feels reckless and dangerous for Ontario.
