I am a voter and taxpayer within Ontario, and I am writing to voice my opposition to your government's push to enact Bill 5, and repeal the Endangered Species Act. I've benefited greatly from the natural spaces that have been protected in and around the GTA, as well as the grand natural areas to the north. The clean air, natural sights, and sense of community I've encountered on these trails make them some of the most important places in the world for me. I am disheartened by your government's actions with Bill 5 meant to not only scrap the Endangered Species Act, but open up these very important ecosystems to destruction while bypassing laws, and reduce Indigenous input on their lands. I cannot stand by and allow you to continue this action without making my voice heard.
I urge you and your government to:
– Cancel Bill 5 and plans to scrap the Endangered Species Act or implement “regulation-free zones” for resource extraction.
– Commit to strengthening the Endangered Species Act.
Rather than significantly weakening protections for species at risk, your government should be safeguarding biodiversity, respecting Indigenous rights and ensuring local communities benefit from the ecosystem services that nature freely provides. Doesn't it seem counter-intuitive to destroy life under the banner of care?
I hope you have a good day, surrounded by the bountiful nature Ontario provides,
