I strongly oppose Bill 5, the so-called “Protecting Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act.” Far from protecting Ontario, this bill threatens our environment, biodiversity, democratic institutions, and Indigenous rights. It grants unprecedented powers to the Premier and Cabinet to override laws and bypass public accountability through “Special Economic Zones” — a dangerous step toward authoritarianism. Bill 5 also guts the Endangered Species Act, replacing it with a toothless framework that allows critical habitats to be destroyed and recovery plans to be ignored. The exemption of the Eagle’s Nest mine from a full environmental review further illustrates how this bill prioritizes corporate interests over ecological and public well-being. These sweeping changes not only disregard scientific evidence and democratic process but also risk irreversible harm to species, ecosystems, and communities. We need real solutions to economic challenges — ones that respect the rule of law, uphold environmental protection, and support sustainable, inclusive development. I urge you to reject Bill 5 and instead commit to strengthening Ontario’s environmental laws, advancing reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples, and safeguarding the natural heritage that all Ontarians depend on
