I strongly oppose Bill 5, the Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act. This bill threatens Ontario’s natural heritage, democratic processes, and Indigenous rights. Repealing the Endangered Species Act and replacing it with vague, unenforceable “goals” will endanger already at-risk wildlife and ecosystems.
Even more concerning, Bill 5 allows “special economic zones” where major developments could bypass environmental assessments, public input, and Indigenous consultation — violating treaty obligations and erasing hard-won protections.
Ontarians have not asked for weaker safeguards or for Indigenous voices to be ignored. I urge the government to withdraw Bill 5 and work with Indigenous communities, environmental experts, and the public to build a stronger, more just path forward.
