I am writing in strong opposition of Bill 5.
This legislation proposes to repeal one of the last remaining protections of at-risk plant and animal life. This would be disastrous for sensitive ecosystems, for human and wildlife health, and for Indigenous rights.
Protecting nature is not only a moral imperative, it is one of the most effective ways to act against climate change. Bulldozing over wetlands and pavings parks destroys important habitats, takes away beloved green space, and is a move in the wrong direction .
The Endangered Species Act is crucial. Prioritizing "economic growth" at the expense of local ecosystems and wildlife is irresponsible, and Ontarians do not want this. Environmental assessments and Indigenous consultation must remain at the forefront of future development.
I urge the Ontario government to withdraw Bill 5.
