I am completely opposed to Bill 5.
The proposed changes cancel the Species at Risk Act. The suggested Species Conservation Act is weak and insufficient protection that will result in the loss of many sensitive species such as caribou (also culturally significant, and necessary for Treaty Rights).
The proposed 'special economic zones' are illegal, egregious, and undemocratic. No areas should be exempt from regulatory protections, which are in place for good reason. The lack of public notice and consultation is unacceptable and undemocratic. This proposed Bill is an unprecedented attack on legal protections and transparency, and it should be scrapped entirely. It is a threat to basic human health, ecosystem health, treaty rights, drinking water protection, the right of residents to have a say and be aware of projects that impact them, and legal requirements.
