This legislation is quite frankly outrageous. It completely guts the Endangered Species Act for these special economic zones. And “trusted proponents” is completely ill-defined, and will likely mean mining companies who historically don’t care a hoot for the environment if it gets in the way of their economic interests.
This legislation is eerily similar to the gutting of the EPA in the US and the notion of “drill baby, drill”. I’m a conservative at heart and a believer in small government. But governments play a huge role in protecting marginalized groups, the environment, and so on, where economic interests could easily prevail.
Doug Ford and his government are abdicating their responsibilities to the people of Ontario by pursuing this reckless piece of legislation.
