I am writing to express my strong opposition to Bill C-5 as it stands before the Ontario legislature. While legislative reform is often necessary to adapt to evolving societal needs, Bill C-5, in its current form, raises serious concerns regarding its long-term impact on community safety, accountability, and public trust in the justice system.

One of the most alarming aspects of the bill is its potential to weaken existing safeguards without offering adequate alternatives. Instead of promoting responsible and equitable governance, the bill appears to prioritize expediency over thoughtful reform. It lacks comprehensive consultation with stakeholders, especially those directly affected by its provisions—such as community organizations, legal experts, and vulnerable populations.

Furthermore, the bill’s vague language and broad scope risk unintended consequences, including undermining judicial discretion and limiting the tools available to law enforcement or social support systems. Such changes, if rushed, can destabilize the balance between public safety and individual rights.

Good policy is built on evidence, transparency, and democratic engagement. Bill C-5 fails to meet those standards. It should not be pushed forward without a full, independent review and substantial public input.

I urge lawmakers to pause and reconsider the path this legislation is taking. Ontario deserves laws that are clear, fair, and crafted with the care our communities deserve.
