Comment
The MNO is concerned about:
- the exclusion of species recovery from the purpose of The Species Conservation Act;
- the narrow definition of habitat, which reduces protections on populations;
- the lack of temporal and spatial parameters in the definition of habitat;
- the lack of information regarding how Aboriginal and treaty rights will be upheld;
- the potential for COSSARO to function apolitically;
- the removal of recovery strategies from COSSARO's mandate;
- warrantless searches of property;
- the power to change regulations and permits under the act and how it might affect consultation with the Métis;
- the repeal of the Endangered Species Act, 2007 which contains Indigenous cultural permits; and
- various other concerns related to the conservation of species
