I am writing to express my deep concern and strong opposition to Bill 5, Protecting Ontario by Unleashing the Economy Act. In particular, I oppose the proposed immediate amendments to the Endangered Species Act (ESA), as well as its full repeal and replacement with the new Species Conservation Act, 2025 (SCA). Premier Ford claims the bill is intended to strengthen Ontario's economy in response to U.S. tariffs. In reality, it is a sprawling omnibus bill with troubling implications for endangered species, clean energy and Indigenous rights.
This bill prioritizes economic interests at the expense of environmental protection and respect for human rights. If passed, Bill 5 will cause direct harm to vital ecosystems, endangered species and critical waterways, while undermining Indigenous rights to free, informed and ongoing consent.
Healthy ecosystems are not a barrier to economic growth; they are the foundation of it. Ontario’s biodiversity is already under significant pressure from urban sprawl, climate change and unnecessary development. Weakening protections for at-risk species and their habitats will only accelerate this crisis, threatening both wildlife and the communities—particularly Indigenous communities—whose culture, identity and livelihood depend on thriving ecosystems.
I stand with the many Ontarians who view the establishment of Special Economic Zones and the repeal of both the Endangered Species Act and the Heritage Act as short-sighted and dangerous. For these reasons, I urge you to stop Bill 5 from passing.
