This approach to fast-tracking development will have the opposite approach to what is intended. By circumventing a predictable, transparent regulatory system and the rule of law, the notion of special economic zones will remove the process for disagreements over development to be solved in a fair way. This will push disagreements into areas where they will be more difficult and costly to resolve (ie protests and legal proceedings).
The proposal of special economic zones shows a lack of understanding of Canadian law and constitution. Obtaining free, prior and informed consent from Indigenous peoples is the government’s constitutional obligation, and cannot be circumvented through provincial statute.
