Taykwa Tagamou Nation (TTN) opposes the Special Economic Zones Act, 2025 in its current form due to the absence of safeguards protecting Indigenous rights and territories. The Act enables the creation of zones and exemptions from key regulations without requiring consultation or consent from impacted Nations. This violates Section 35 of the Constitution and the UNDRIP Act, and risks unchecked development across traditional territories.
We urge the government to:
• Guarantee mandatory, early, and meaningful consultation with Indigenous Nations before any SEZ designation or exemption is granted;
• Embed Indigenous co-governance in the design, operation, and oversight of all SEZs;
• Ensure transparency, clear criteria, and judicial review mechanisms are included in the legislation.
A rights-based approach is essential if Ontario intends to achieve both economic growth and reconciliation.
