Weakening or repealing Ontario’s Endangered Species Act would have far-reaching consequences not only for at-risk wildlife, but for the people and economy of this province. Critical habitats — including wetlands, forests, and grasslands — are disappearing at an alarming rate, yet they provide essential ecosystem services like flood protection, water purification, and carbon storage.
These ecosystems are deeply interconnected; degrading one area can disrupt entire ecological networks, making them less resilient and less able to support both wildlife and human needs. While economic growth is vital, it should not come at the expense of the very natural systems that sustain our agriculture, tourism, health, and safety. Biodiversity is not a luxury — it’s infrastructure. Protecting endangered species means protecting clean water, stable food systems, and long-term prosperity for Ontario’s communities.
