I have been impacted by the ongoing GFL stench since the summer of 2023 and GFL's inability to control operations. They promise they will do better. They had pipes break and leachate went into the soil precisely where they plan to put a leachate processing plant merely 30 meters from a commercial restaurant site housing many eateries and coffee shops. The open leachate pond which has had 2 serious issues in the past 6 months and the overstrength of the leachate in the sanitary sewers is not an example of good neighbour to the residents of Stoney Creek. I am all out of faith that this leachate plant will be the answer this company boasts about. They have shown time and time again their continued ineffectiveness to control the offensive odours and total disregard for the lives of residents they impact on a daily basis. This is their mission statement :
GFL's mission is to provide comprehensive environmental solutions to its customers, focusing on safety, operational excellence, and customer service. This commitment aims to improve the environment and communities they serve, ensuring sustainable practices in waste management.
There has not been operational excellence and they are not improving the environment or the community of Stoney Creek. Children playing in the soccer field being subjected to horrific odours !
We the residents demand of MOE to do their job and that GFL is held accountable
1) WE need reliable and true air monitoring in the area.
2) MECP needs to be sure to limits air emissions from the treatment plant such as ammonia and hydrogen sulphides which have been very high in the past 3 years and GFL is being fined.
3) I would hope that the landfill effluent fully complies with city of Hamilton sewer use bylaw. GFL has had problems with that on more than one occasion. We don’t want odours popping up downstream from leachate/effluent discharged to sewers where I live 2 km away.
4) I demand a community health study as a requirement of the new ECA.
5) I request expedited closure of GFL for failure to comply and be transparent in their operation.
6) I request that any construction work that would enlarge the landfill by quarrying or or mechanically breaking up the bedrock at the north end of landfill be prohibited as it would cause excess noise and vibrations. This is law according to the Niagara Escarpment commision.
Without prejudice
