I am submitting my comment as a resident affected by ongoing odour issues from the GFL Stoney Creek landfill. Over the past several years, I and other members of the community have experienced strong, unpleasant odours—often described as rotten eggs, leachate, and chemical-like smells—that make being outdoors extremely uncomfortable and sometimes hazardous.
These odours are persistent, affecting residents during morning walks, children waiting for the school bus, and general outdoor activities. They are not isolated to individual homes but are clearly present across the community, impacting quality of life and potentially health.
I strongly urge the Ministry to require continuous, transparent air monitoring around all sides of the landfill, with measurements for nitrogen oxides, ammonia, particulate matter (PM2.5/PM10), total reduced sulfur (TRS), and ozone. Data should be accessible to the public to ensure accountability and help residents understand the facility’s impact.
Additionally, I request that robust odour control measures be implemented for all leachate treatment and material handling operations, and that the facility is required to engage meaningfully with the community, not just provide generic responses to complaints.
These steps are essential to protect residents, rebuild trust, and ensure that landfill operations do not compromise health and well-being.
