As a resident in the vicinity of the GFL Stoney Creek landfill, I am deeply concerned about the ongoing odour issues that have affected this community for several years. The odours, often described as Leachate Odour (Rotten eggs) mixed with Industrial/Chemical smells, are strong enough to make outdoor activities, such as walking or waiting for the school bus, uncomfortable and potentially harmful.

The problem is persistent, occurring at various times of day, and impacts residents across the neighbourhood. The intensity of the smell has sometimes caused nausea and throat irritation, particularly during warm or humid weather.

I strongly recommend that the Ministry require continuous air monitoring stations around the landfill perimeter, measuring nitrogen oxides, ammonia, particulate matter (PM2.5/PM10), TRS, and ozone, with publicly accessible data. Additionally, I request that robust odour mitigation systems be installed for all leachate treatment and waste relocation operations, and that GFL maintains transparent, meaningful communication with the community.

Addressing these issues through enforceable monitoring and mitigation will help protect residents’ health, ensure regulatory compliance, and rebuild trust between the facility and the community.
