Comment
I am submitting this comment as a local resident affected by the operations of the GFL Stoney Creek landfill. Over the past several years, the community has endured repeated exposure to strong, unpleasant odours, often described as Leachate Odour (Rotten eggs) and Industrial/Chemical smells. These odours have disrupted daily life, made outdoor activity unbearable at times, and caused symptoms including headaches, nausea, and throat irritation.
Given the facility’s history, I urge the Ministry to require continuous air quality monitoring at multiple points around the landfill. Monitoring should include nitrogen oxides, ammonia, particulate matter (PM2.5/PM10), TRS, and ozone, with results accessible to the public. The new Leachate Treatment System must include advanced odour control measures and the operator must maintain clear and responsive communication with residents regarding operational changes or issues.
Ensuring strict enforcement and transparency will help address long-standing concerns, reduce health risks, and protect the community from future odour-related impacts.
