I wish to raise my concerns regarding the proposed Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA) amendment for the new Leachate Treatment System at GFL Stoney Creek. Residents in the area have endured repeated exposure to severe odours over several years, often described as leachate (rotten eggs) and industrial/chemical smells. These odours are disruptive, make outdoor activities unbearable, and have caused symptoms such as nausea, throat irritation, and headaches.
Given this history, I recommend the installation of continuous air monitoring stations along all boundaries of the facility. Monitoring should include nitrogen oxides, ammonia, particulate matter (PM2.5/PM10), total reduced sulfur (TRS), and ozone. Public access to monitoring data is critical to ensure transparency and community confidence.
I also request that advanced odour mitigation systems be integrated into the new treatment facility and that the operator maintain active communication with residents about operational changes and odour management. Prioritizing these measures will help address ongoing community concerns, limit risks, and demonstrate that environmental compliance is being taken seriously.
