In addition to the scenic cycling routes noted in the north Waterloo-St Jacobs-Hawkesville-Elmira areas, It would make sense to include Arthur Street between Elmira and St. Jacobs as an official cycling route for commuting purposes.
There are generous wide paved shoulders on Arthur Street south between St. Jacobs & Elmira, making it a safer and more direct commuting route than other local roads between those communities, which have little or no paved shoulders.
There is also already a short signed bike route in place that allows cyclists to avoid the roundabout at the north edge of St. Jacobs (Hwy 85N/Arthur St/Sawmill Road); as well as an underpass to safely cross Arthur Street at the north edge of St. Jacobs (for pedestrians/horse&buggy/bicycles).
This route is already very well used by cyclists (as well as horse & buggy traffic) commuting between Elmira, St. Jacobs and Waterloo.
If infrastructure continues to allow for, and encourage, cycling on that route, it's likely an increasing number of people would choose to cycle (to work for example), rather than commute by car - in what is an intensely and heavy (car) traffic area.
Thanks for the opportunity to weigh in...
