I am concerned about the proposed Environmental Compliance Approval for the anaerobic digestion and renewable natural gas facility due to the potential impacts on air quality, surrounding farmland, nearby waterways, and the health and well-being of local residents.

The proposal includes emissions such as hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, sulphur dioxide, methanol, and nitrogen oxides. While mitigation systems are proposed, these contaminants can still create significant odour concerns, respiratory irritation, and environmental impacts if equipment malfunctions, maintenance is inadequate, or systems fail over time. Hydrogen sulphide in particular is known for strong odours and potential health concerns even at relatively low concentrations.

I am also concerned about the cumulative effects of increased industrial activity in an agricultural and residential region such as Chatham-Kent. Digestate handling, waste transportation, flaring, and processing operations may increase risks related to spills, runoff, groundwater contamination, noise, and traffic. Heavy rainfall events or infrastructure failures could further increase the risk of contaminants reaching local drainage systems and waterways.

Given the long-term nature of this project, I believe stronger environmental safeguards, independent monitoring, transparent public reporting, and enforceable accountability measures are necessary before approval is considered. Local residents should have confidence that air quality, water resources, farmland, and overall community health will not be negatively impacted by this operation.

I urge the Ministry to proceed cautiously and fully evaluate the long-term environmental and community impacts before granting approval.
