My concerns revolve primarily around several key points: the lack of public consultation for this proposal, not following the Municipality of Chatham-Kent policies and Minicipal Act requirements for consultation regarding our Official Plan and Comprehensive Zoning Bylaw. Council didn’t approve 900,000 TPY, we approved 370,000TPY. Which is a major difference. The zoning amendment also has a difference between waste processing vs waste disposal. This project should be much more transparent.
An additional concern is the close proximity of the Thames River and the eventual flow of the wastewater into the River. What type of guardrails and processes are in place to ensure all water is properly treated before it leaves the plant. And how do we make sure anything draining into the Thames is safe? Since the issue with them dumping H2S into the municipal sewer system and damaging it so severely the entirety had to be replaced along Bloomfield Road and partially on Richmond St, I do worry this could happen again. And the damage could be devastating.
