The route from Longbow Corners, down Hwy 71 and Hwy 11 to Shabaqua Corners in Northwestern Ontario will be a waste of millions of taxpayer dollars. Traffic volumes are low enough on Hwy 71/11 that paved shoulders are not required for cyclists. It can be designated as a bike route in it's current condition. This will allow the ministry to put resources towards paving the shoulders on Hwy 17 northern route where the majority of cyclists are riding. Most cross-country cyclists use the Hwy 17 northern route through Dryden. The length of paving required to complete fully paved shoulders on Hwy 17 is significantly less than the length required on the south route and can be completed much quicker. The driving lanes and shoulder are both wider on Hwy 17, adding to the level of safety for bicyclists. The northern route is also more populated with commercial establishments adding another level of comfort for users.
