It is extremely disappointing to see the Environmental Bill of Rights co-opted for more industrial development and exploitation, at the expense of most Ontarians. The EBR exists to give citizens of this province a right to object to and protest the degradation of the environment from capital gain and corporate greed. Not that anyone should be surprised by this tactic, as the Ford Administration continues its rampage through progress after eviscerating the Endangered Species Act and taking steps to remove what little protection the Far North Act afforded. The Far North is one of the few places left in the province where there is anything left to conserve. Not only is it home to endangered species and landscapes, there are communities of people there who subsist on these ecosystems. Surely this provincial government can be forward thinking instead of reaching back towards industrialism at the expense of true societal progress. What about climate change and protecting your citizens from that alarming future? What about preserving what few species are left here in Ontario? What about giving citizens of the North equitable living and working conditions, without destroying the land that they have called home for centuries and beyond. Stop this madness I say. Read the news. Consume some science. And act like leaders instead of cowards hiding behind the laziness and inertia of big business and limitless extraction profitability. Do not go forward with this change. History will mark you as the government that let Ontario fail its future citizens.
