While it is true that Ontario (especially the GTA) is experiencing a housing shortage, the green belt provides the province’s millions of residents with useful, protected land. Easing restrictions to the green belt would mean less agricultural land near the most populous city in the province, further increasing the need for imported food whose cost to wallets and the environment is greatly more. It would also hurt the water supplies for these areas that are protected from contamination and the biodiversity of the province.
