My friend is an active falconer who has a red tailed hawk. I have read over this proposal and support the changes it would bring to falconers in Ontario.
The proposal seeks to enact policies that are used in other provinces as well as states in the US. I believe that because this system works in other locations it would work in Ontario as well.
I support the draw for trapping goshawks. It seems to me that limiting the trapping of one goshawk from a MNRF administration district would ensure stable goshawk populations and still allow falconers to familiarize themselves with training and hunting with this elusive predator.
Most importantly, being able to trap one common species of raptor per calendar year will let Ontario falconers take part in a falconry tradition that is recognized by UNESCO. I think this means that there are important lessons we can learn through the falconry experience which can be used for conservation purposes.
Thank you.
