I’m concerned about the proposed extension of Site Specific Standards regarding Stelco. While I know the economic activities of Stelco is important to Hamilton for a number of reasons, I do not think that this should constitute a “free pass” and it important for industry to work towards more stringent air quality standards concerning benzene and suspended particulate matter. In the case of Stelco, their current modeled output of suspended particulate matter is especially concerning as it is almost three times that of the 419 Regulation.
Also of concern is the timing and length of the public input period, given the timing around the Holiday Season I feel more time should be allotted to inform the public of the proposed site specific standards
My wife and I are currently expecting a child in the new year and knowing that there is a potential increased risk of cancer directly attributed to industry’s failure to meet the required timelines is unacceptable.
