These proposed changes are unacceptable and completely contrary to the purpose of the Endangered Species Act. Paying into a fund, which is managed by the same corruption that created it, is not the same as preserving individuals of a species. You risk losing critical genetic diversity, creating even more habitat fragmentation and harming species outside of the area for each proposal. It is dangerous, lacking any scientific standing, and irresponsible.
To pay into a fund that aims to conserve species in another location does not provide any protection for species locally, completely defeating the purpose of the Endangered Species Act. The original intent of providing overall benefit has been abandoned.
As a scientist, I have studied species such as the Barn Swallow and Chimney Swift. These changes will directly impact these species, whose choice of habitat is very specific. Paying money to enhance a forest elsewhere will do nothing for them. Artificial nesting structures are hardly used by these species, and providing these elsewhere is nothing but a façade.
It is disheartening that this government attempts to weaken any environmental protection in favour of short-term gains. It ignores the critical roles of these species in our ecosystems, of which we are a part. Are scientists even being genuinely consulted at all? Is the Environmental Registry of Ontario still effective?
I also cannot comprehend why the voices of so many Ontarians are repeatedly ignored when we raise our concerns. It has left me completely disenchanted with our political system and noticing for the first time the corruption that I couldn’t believe we could have here in Canada. There is an alarming lack of transparency and public accountability. You need to do better.
