I'm a citizen of Ajax, and I'm appalled at the suggestion that sewage be sent to the Duffin's Creek Pollution Control Plant. We already have environmental issues in Ajax-Pickering which are as of yet unresolved; ask any resident, and they will tell you that the algae stinks up our much-beloved beaches. The Toronto Star cites that 10 years of planning and millions of dollars have been put into planning a sewage treatment plant in York, which begs the question: Why even entertain the thought of sending it here? What does York Region get out of shipping their sewage to us, and how will Durham benefit from dealing with additional sewage demands? Will the Province aid Durham in upgrading the facility and combating algae issues?
Ultimately, York should deal with its own sewage, and we should deal with our own. Sending sewage to other municipalities seems a short-sighted solution and screams of poor urban planning. Populations do not explode overnight, and York's inability to plan for their own waste is on them, not us.
