To substantially combat climate change without geoengineering, there are really only three options with current technology. Government can either put a price on carbon, thereby letting market forces aid our reduction of emissions, put a cap on CO2 emissions, or massively invest in clean infrastructure. The wisest of the three, in my view, would be a price on carbon, but not in a cap-and-trade model, but a fee-and-dividend model. This way the government would create an incentive for companies to pollute less, while using that revenue to lower taxes on the everyday Ontarians that drive the economy through consumption. It would be a win for both environmentalists and taxpayers.
